English Translation

10.27 Know Me as Ucchaisravas born of nectar, among horses; among lordly elephants (I am) the Airavata; and, among men, the king.

English Commentary

10.27 उच्चैःश्रवसम् Ucchaisravas? अश्वानम् among horses? विद्धि know? माम् Me? अमृतोद्भवम् born of nectar?,ऐरावतम् Airavata? गजेन्द्राणाम् among lordly elephants? नराणाम् among men? च and? नराधिपम् the king.Commentary Nectar was obtained by the gods by churning the ocean of milk. Ucchaisravas is the name of the royal horse which was born in that ocean of milk when it was churned for the nectar.Airavatam The offspring of Iravati? the elephant of Indra born at the time when the ocean of milk was churned.

।।10.27।। सुर और असुरों के द्वारा क्षीरसागर का मन्थन करके अमृत प्राप्त करने की पौराणिक कथा सुप्रसिद्ध है। इस मन्थन की प्रकिया के समय पंखयुक्त शक्तिशाली और समर्थ ऐसा एक अश्व प्रकट हुआ था? जिसका नाम उच्चैश्रवा था? तथा ऐरावत नाम का एक श्वेत गज भी प्रकट हुआ था। इन दोनों को देवताओं के राजा इन्द्र को उपहार के रूप में भेंट किया गया था। पौराणिक वर्णन के अनुसार इस प्रकार की कुल तेरह आकर्षक वस्तुएं उस मन्थन में प्रकट हुई थीं।

10.27. Of the horses, you should know Me to be the nectar-born Uccaihsravas (Indra's horse); of the best elephants, the Airavata (Indra's elephant); and of the men, their king.

।।10.26 -- 10.27।।सुखरूपः पाल्यते लीयते च जगदनेनेति कपिलः।प्रीतिः सुखं कमानन्दः इत्यभिधानात् प्राणो ब्रह्म कं ब्रह्म खं ब्रह्म [छां.उ.4।10।5] इति च। ऋषिं प्रसूतं कपिलं यस्तमग्रे ज्ञानैर्बिभर्ति (ज्ञा) जायमानं च पश्येत् [श्वे.उ.5।2] सुखादनन्तात्पालनाल्लीयनाच्च यं वै देवं कपिलमुदाहरन्ति इति,(सामवेदे) बाभ्रव्यशाखायाम्।

।।10.27।। घोड़ोंमें अमृतके साथ समुद्रसे प्रकट होनेवाले उच्चैःश्रवा नामक घोड़ेको, श्रेष्ठ हाथियोंमें ऐरावत नामक हाथीको और मनुष्योंमें राजाको मेरी विभूति मानो।

।।10.27।। व्याख्या--'उच्चैःश्रवसमश्वानां विद्धि माममृतोद्भवम्'--समुद्रमन्थनके समय प्रकट होनेवाले चौदह रत्नोंमें उच्चैःश्रवा घोड़ा भी एक रत्न है। यह इन्द्रका वाहन और सम्पूर्ण घोड़ोंका राजा है। इसलिये भगवान्ने इसको अपनी विभूति बताया है। 'ऐरावतं गजेन्द्राणाम्'--हाथियोंके समुदायमें जो श्रेष्ठ होता है, उसको गजेन्द्र कहते हैं। ऐसे गजेन्द्रोंमें भी ऐरावत हाथी श्रेष्ठ है। उच्चैःश्रवा घोड़ेकी तरह ऐरावत हाथीकी उत्पत्ति भी समुद्रसे हुई है और यह भी इन्द्रका वाहन है। इसलिये भगवान्ने इसको अपनी विभूति बताया है।

'नराणां च नराधिपम्' -- सम्पूर्ण प्रजाका पालन, संरक्षण, शासन करनेवाला होनेसे राजा सम्पूर्ण मनुष्योंमें श्रेष्ठ है। साधारण मनुष्योंकी अपेक्षा राजामें भगवान्की ज्यादा शक्ति होती है। इसलिये भगवान्ने राजाको अपनी विभूति बताया है (टिप्पणी प0 559)।इन विभूतियोंमें जो बलवत्ता, सामर्थ्य है, वह भगवान्से ही आयी है, अतः उसको भगवान्की ही मानकर भगवान्का चिन्तन करना चाहिये।

English Translation

10.26 - 10.29 Of trees I am Asvattha which is worthy of worship. Of celestial seers I am Narada. Kamadhuk is the divine cow. I am Kandarpa, the cause of progeny. Sarpas are single-headed snakes while Nagas are many-headed snakes. Aatic creatures are known as Yadamsi. Of them I am Varuna. Of subdures, I am Yama, the son of the sun-god.

।।10.19 -- 10.42।।हन्त ते कथयिष्यामीत्यादि जगत्स्थित इत्यन्तम्। अहमात्मा (श्लो. 20) इत्यनेन व्यवच्छेदं वारयति। अन्यथा स्थावराणां हिमालय इत्यादिवाक्येषु हिमालय एव भगवान् नान्य इति व्यवच्छेदेन? निर्विभागत्वाभावात् ब्रह्मदर्शनं खण्डितम् अभविष्यत्। यतो यस्याखण्डाकारा व्याप्तिस्तथा चेतसि न उपारोहति? तां च [यो] जिज्ञासति तस्यायमुपदेशग्रन्थः। तथाहि उपसंहारे ( उपसंहारेण) भेदाभेदवादं,यद्यद्विभूतिमत्सत्त्वम् (श्लो -- 41) इत्यनेनाभिधाय? पश्चादभेदमेवोपसंहरति अथवा बहुनैतेन -- विष्टभ्याहमिदं -- एकांशेन जगत् स्थितः (श्लो -- 42) इति। उक्तं हि -- पादोऽस्य विश्वा भूतानि त्रिपादस्यामृतं दिवि।।इति -- RV? X? 90? 3प्रजानां सृष्टिहेतुः सर्वमिदं भगवत्तत्त्वमेव तैस्तेर्विचित्रै रूपैर्भाव्यमानं (S तत्त्वमेतैस्तैर्विचित्रैः रूपैः ? N -- विचित्ररूपै -- ) सकलस्य (S?N सकलमस्य) विषयतां यातीति।

English Translation

10.27 Asvanam, among horses; viddhi, know; mam, Me; to be the horse named Uccaihsravas; amrta-udbhavam, born of nectar-born when (the sea was) churned (by the gods) for nectar. Airavata, the son of Iravati, gajendranam, among the Lordly elephants; 'know Me to be so' remains understood. And naranam, among men; know Me as the naradhipam, King of men.

।।10.27।।घोड़ोंमें? जो अमृतप्राप्तिके निमित्त किये हुए समुद्रमन्थनसे उत्पन्न उच्चैःश्रवा नामक घोड़ा है? उसको तू मेरा स्वरूप समझ। गजेन्द्रोंमें -- मुख्य हाथियोंमें -- इरावतीका पुत्र जो ऐरावत नामक हाथी है? उसको तू मेरा स्वरूप जान और मनुष्योंमें मुझे तू राजा समझ।

।।10.26 -- 10.27।।सिद्धानां कपिलो मुनिः इति कपिलशब्दं व्याचष्टे -- सुखेति। सुखरूप इति कः? पाल्यते जगदनेनेति पिः?पा रक्षणे [धा.पा.2।46] इत्यतः किः? लीयते जगदनेनेति लः।ली श्लेषणे [धा.पा.9।29] इत्यस्माड्डःला आदाने [धा.पा.2।48] इत्यतो वाकः। ततः कर्मधारयः। कशब्दस्य सुखवाचित्वेऽभिधानं प्रयोगं च पठति -- प्रीतिरिति। समग्रार्थे श्रुतिमाह -- ऋषिमिति। तं भगवन्तमृषिं कपिलं च पश्येत्। कथमृषिः सर्वज्ञत्वात्? इत्युच्यते। यः प्रसूतं पूर्वकल्पेषु जातं जायमानं वर्तमानं चैवमागामि च जगज्ज्ञानैर्बिभर्ति जानातीति यावत्। कथं कपिलः इत्यत उक्तं -- सुखादिति। यच्छब्दद्वयस्य तमित्यनेनान्वयः।

।।10.27।।उच्चैश्श्रवसमिति। सप्तमुखाग्निरूपमश्वम्? अमृतेन समुद्भवो यस्य। भगवत्सेवायां क्रीडोपयोगितया विभूतिः स चिन्तनीयः। तथैरावतोऽपि तदभिषेचनेन वा। भागवतेऽपि [स्कं.11अ.16] विभूतिनिरूपणे तदिदमुक्तम्। तारतम्यभेदस्त्वैच्छिकः एकवक्तृकत्वात्।

English Translation

Of horses know Me to be Uccaiḥśravā, produced during the churning of the ocean for nectar. Of lordly elephants I am Airāvata, and among men I am the monarch.

English Commentary

The devotee demigods and the demons ( asuras ) once took part in churning the sea. From this churning, nectar and poison were produced, and Lord Śiva drank the poison. From the nectar were produced many entities, of which there was a horse named Uccaiḥśravā. Another animal produced from the nectar was an elephant named Airāvata. Because these two animals were produced from nectar, they have special significance, and they are representatives of Kṛṣṇa. Amongst the human beings, the king is the representative of Kṛṣṇa because Kṛṣṇa is the maintainer of the universe, and the kings, who are appointed on account of their godly qualifications, are maintainers of their kingdoms. Kings like Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira, Mahārāja Parīkṣit and Lord Rāma were all highly righteous kings who always thought of the citizens’ welfare. In Vedic literature, the king is considered to be the representative of God. In this age, however, with the corruption of the principles of religion, monarchy decayed and is now finally abolished. It is to be understood that in the past, however, people were more happy under righteous kings.
